In Luke 10, we meet two sisters whose responses to Jesus reveal so much about our own hearts. Martha opened her home to Him, but quickly became overwhelmed by all the preparations. Mary, meanwhile, simply sat at His feet and listened.
When Martha complained, Jesus responded with such tenderness:
“Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better…”
— Luke 10:38–42 NIV
I see myself in Martha far more often than I’d like to admit. I’ve hurried, stressed, and busied myself with tasks—believing they were essential—only to realize I’d missed the very presence of the One I needed most. There were days I told myself, “If I don’t do it, no one will.” And while folding laundry, paying bills, or researching appliances are part of life, I’ve felt the sting of realizing I had traded moments with Jesus for things that could’ve waited.
Sometimes that led to bitterness or envy when others seemed to choose the “better” portion—just like Mary—while I stayed tangled in my to-do list.
But in His mercy, God didn’t leave me there. He gently drew me back through years of my journals, showing me that even in my distracted seasons, He was refining me. He reminded me that transformation is often slow and quiet—but real.
This blog series comes from those very journal moments—times when I finally paused long enough to sit at Jesus’ feet. Times when I chose what was better.
My prayer is that as you read, you create space—right where you are—to welcome Him. Be Mary in these moments. Imagine yourself before Jesus, simply listening. Because His desire for you is relationship, not performance. And He truly is the better choice.
